BESPOKE SEAT PADS FOR IPPUDO ESSEX ROAD
Original seat pads were designed and produced for Ippudo on Essex Road, London. The face fabric was selected to complement the restaurant’s wooden interior, with red piping that echoes the brand’s iconic ramen bowl.
The upholstery fabric was chosen not only for the design but for durability, achieving a Martindale rub count of over 35,000.
The previous cushions were square and slightly oversized, which caused them to shift when customers sat down. This was addressed by introducing a rounded form that prevents corners from catching on clothing, along with dimensions precisely tailored to the bench dept h - one of the key advantages of bespoke production. The rear of each cushion is cropped to create a straight edge, allowing them to sit flush against the back of the bench. This detail keeps the cushions neatly aligned and minimizes movement as customers come and go.
The shape also draws inspiration from traditional Japanese trays, "半月盆"(Hangetsu-bon), which similarly combine a circular form with a straight edge.
